The HBO Offering From DISH Network
HBO Movies
Though you probably knew about HBO movies—after all, blockbuster movies have always been the network’s meat and potatoes—what you probably didn’t know about are all the original HBO movies you’ll have access to if you order HBO service from DISH Network. In 2011 alone HBO will premier two original movies, both of which will feature big-name actors, directors and screenwriters.
For example, “The Sunset Limited,” will star Academy Award winner Tommy Lee Jones and Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson. Based on the Pulitzer Prize winner Cormack McCarthy’s play of the same name, the film follows the story of two men who discuss the meaning of life after one of them saves the other from throwing himself under a Harlem subway train. This HBO original could net Jones and Jackson several more nominations if not awards in 2012, and it won’t be available anywhere but on HBO.
HBO Boxing Specials
Nothing gets the blood up like watching a live boxing match, and with HBO boxing specials attending a bout has never been easier. In fact, HBO has sponsored the HBO World Boxing Championship for three decades, and the network has offered exclusive coverage of some of the century’s most important matches, beginning with the 1975 “Thrilla in Manila” matchup between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.
This year HBO is carrying on the tradition with upcoming matchups between Yuriorkis Gamboa and Jorge Solis, and Erik Morales and Marcos Maidana, as well as many others. Because HBO has been the name in televised boxing, you can be sure the network will air many, many more matches while you’re an HBO subscriber. So, simply put, if you’re a boxing aficionado, there’s no way you can pass up an HBO membership, unless you can afford tickets to see a year’s worth of great fights live.
HBO Documentaries
Just as well-known as HBO movies and HBO boxing specials are HBO documentaries, like its provocative “Cathouse” and “Cathouse 2: Back in the Saddle.” And, with HBO’s track record for producing such groundbreaking studies as “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired” and “Homeless: The Motel Kids of Orange Country,” you won’t want to miss the network’s next foray into this genre.
HBO Original Series
HBO is known for pushing the proverbial envelope in order to show true human drama, but the network also takes a similar interest in lighter topics. For instance, HBO Comedy, one of the nine great HBO channels included in DISH Network’s HBO package, is constantly premiering standup comedy specials and original series from some of America’s best-known comedians. What’s more, HBO comedy is home to the long-time favorite “Real Time with Bill Maher” and the newer “Ricky Gervais Show.”
Both these examples of irreverent original series will definitely have you howling, but even more importantly, they’ll get you thinking. After all, Bill Maher has been a major political commentator for nearly 20 years—and he’s had an immense impact every year he’s been on the air. So why wait for Jon Stewart to get his cue from Maher on topics like the Iraq War and Christine O’Donnell when you could go straight to the source by ordering HBO Comedy and watching Maher’s HBO originals for yourself?
