The Sundance Channel HD & Other DISH Platinum Channels
If you’re already familiar with the DISH Network DISH Platinum HD service, you might be thinking of going in for one of the DISH Network deals featured on InternetLion.com. And if you’ve been wise enough to read up on this and other DISH Network deals before ordering, you probably want to know what’s included in a DISH Platinum package too.
Now, of course, here at InternetLion.com we could just tell you that many premium HD channels, including the HD Theater channel, the Sony Movie Channel, Retroplex HD, Indieplex HD, Movieplex HD and the Sundance Channel HD make up DISH Network’s Platinum lineup. But that wouldn’t tell you anything about why this deal is such a steal. That’s why we’ve done you one better and put together the following article. In it we provide a short synopsis of some of the most popular channels included in a DISH Platinum package and list examples of the kinds of programming they offer.
The Sundance Channel HD, HD Theater & Sony Movie Channel
The following list explains the programming available on some of the most popular channels that are included in DISH Platinum’s lineup, like the HD Theater channel. For a more complete list of channels and a description for each please visit DISHNetwork.com/HDPlatinum.
The Sundance Channel HD on DISH Network
Likely searching for “Sundance Channel HD DISH Network” brought you to this page, so it’s only fair that the first DISH Platinum channel we list is the Sundance Channel HD on DISH Network. This channel is dedicated to showing independent films, short films and foreign films in HD. It also boasts no commercials and original programming like “Anatomy of a Scene,” which features breakdowns of how specific movie scenes were made from their creators’ perspectives.
The HD Theater Channel
One of the channels included in a DISH Platinum lineup that is only available in HD is the HD Theater channel. The HD Theater Channel is dedicated to educational programming, featuring programming found on the Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, the Science Channel and TLC. The difference is that its programming schedules are completely different from those of its sister channels and it show only the most awe-inspiring programming from them, all in HD.
So, for instance, a Discovery Channel documentary on sharks that will make you jump out of your seat will air right on the HD Theater channel after a Science Channel program showing the moon landing like you’ve never seen it before. Basically, then, watching the HD Theater channel is like having an IMAX™ theater in your living room—just with a slightly smaller screen.
The Sony Movie Channel
The Sony Movie Channel shows movies from the Sony Pictures Entertainment library—including all those old Columbia/TriStar Pictures films you can’t find on Turner Classic Movies—all uncut and re-mastered in 1080i HD. It’s also commercial free, meaning classics like “Groundhog Day,” which haven’t aired on HBO and Showtime in ages, are back and look better than ever.
The Retroplex HD Channel
Retroplex HD is an interesting inclusion in the DISH Platinum lineup in that it is the only other channel besides TCM HD to show only old movies. Plus, it is owned by the same company as the Starz channels, so you can be sure it offers plenty of great films, uncut and commercial-free. Take, for instance, the movie it launched with, “Pickup on South Street”. This film noir classic from 20th Century Fox studios isn’t available on TCM and is just as good according to some fans of hard-boiled movies as, say, “The Maltese Falcon.”
The Indieplex HD Channel
A sister channel to Retroplex HD and Movieplex HD, Indieplex HD is similar to the Sundance Channel HD in that it’s dedicated to airing independent films. And like Retroplex HD, and unlike Movieplex HD, the programming aired on Indieplex HD is not simply an HD rebroadcast of programming that’s aired on other Encore and Starz channels. A great example of the kinds of movies the channel airs is the movie it premiered with, Wim Wenders’s “Paris Texas,” which has won tons of awards since its release in 1984, including the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
